Bespoke Virtual Tours vs Matterport and Google Street View

Discover the key differences and why a custom-built virtual tour gives you more control, better quality, and lasting value.

Introduction

At the heart of every virtual tour I create is a commitment to high-quality, professional imagery that truly reflects your space. That’s why I don’t use quick-fix solutions like one-shot 360° cameras, they simply can’t match the image quality, control, and polish delivered by DSLR or Mirrorless based photography.

I also don’t offer Matterport tours. While Matterport is a popular platform, it’s a closed, proprietary system with limited flexibility. Its cameras often struggle with outdoor shooting, and its restrictive terms mean I can’t provide you with a truly tailored service. Google Street View tours are something I do offer, however, changes to Google’s system few years ago mean there’s no guarantee that your virtual tour will appear prominently on your listing.

For clients who want full control, future-proofing, and a beautifully crafted experience, my own virtual tour platform is the best choice. It allows for maximum visual impact, branded overlays, flexible hosting, and complete ownership of your content.

1.
Not All Virtual Tours Are Created Equal

Many businesses assume all virtual tours offer the same features and quality, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The differences between platforms and approaches can dramatically affect how your space is experienced by viewers.

Some platforms prioritise automation and scalability over visual quality or creative control. Others, like bespoke tours, are crafted specifically to reflect your brand, tell your story, and highlight what makes your space unique. The tools and techniques behind the scenes, from camera choice to post-production, have a direct impact on the final result.

2.
Limitations of Matterport and Google Street View

Both Matterport and Google Street View have their place — but they come with constraints that may not suit every project.

Image quality is often compressed, with limited scope for creative control or post-production refinement. Hosting is platform-controlled (you can't self-host), which means you're tied into their ecosystem and pricing model.

Navigation and branding options are limited, making it harder to customise the experience or align it with your visual identity.

Content control is also restricted — you may not be able to include the interactive elements, hotspots, or multimedia that your space deserves.

Why My Virtual Tours Offer More

With my bespoke service, you get far more than just a walkthrough.

  • True 360° x 180° capture: The entire scene is captured—ceiling to floor, wall to wall.
  • Flexible hosting: You can host it with me or on your own server — putting the content fully under your control.
  • No subscription fees: Once your tour is complete, there are no ongoing charges if hosting on your own server.
  • Branding and overlays: Add logos, labels, popups, videos, and more.
  • Offline use: Tours can be supplied to work without internet.
  • Facebook & social media ready: Use panoramas for marketing.
  • VR compatible: Ready for Oculus, Cardboard, Gear VR and more.
  • Support for multilingual and sign language interfaces: ideal for museums, international audiences, and heritage sites
  • Built‑in accessibility features: High‑contrast mode, scalable text, keyboard‑only navigation, one‑finger mobile controls, and structured audio feedback (including current‑view descriptions) — all designed to make tours inclusive and easy to use for every visitor.
  • Demonstrate different lighting or illumination settings interactively
  • Optional gamified features: from quizzes and hotspots to challenges and trails to boost visitor engagement

And most importantly, I work closely with you to craft a tour that fits your goals—whether you want to guide visitors through a museum, showcase a development, or help customers explore your space remotely.

Independence & Flexibility

Unlike proprietary platforms, our custom virtual tours are built using standard web technologies — HTML5, JavaScript, and XML — which ensures complete compatibility with modern web browsers without the need for any third-party software or subscriptions. A perpetual license to view the tour is included in the package, giving you full long-term access.

Once uploaded to your web server, typically in a /virtualtourfolder/ , the tour is instantly available via your domain (e.g. yourdomain.co.uk/virtualtourfolder/). Hosting the tour on your own domain not only gives you full control, but also conveys greater trust and professionalism to your audience compared to links hosted on external services like Matterport. This simple and open approach offers maximum flexibility, ensures your content remains accessible in the long term, and eliminates dependency on any external platform.

Conclusion: A Tour That Works for You, Not the Platform

Choosing the right type of virtual tour can make all the difference, whether it’s about first impressions, long-term value, or the flexibility to evolve with your brand. While platforms like Matterport and Google Street View may suit certain use cases, they can’t match the tailored, high-quality experience a bespoke tour provides.
